ネットで一度流行ったアマビエというお題はなかなか難題で、美術家としてどうヒネるべきか考えましたが‥‥やはりヒネらず、素直にストレートに描くことにしました。江戸時代にアマビエが漁師の前に現れ「私の姿を描いて家に貼れば疫病は退散する」と告げたという純朴な言い伝えを、そのまま絵の内容にも、絵のスタイルにも取り入れることにしました。
右の人間は縄文時代の銛を持っていて、古代の「海の民」のようなイメージですが、あえて男女の性別がわからないように描いたので、両性具有の妖精みたいものを想像していただいても結構です。そのようなファンタジックな設定は、注文主である角川さんの得意ジャンルに寄せた面もあります。地球で最も原始的な生命体であるウィルスを、万物のエネルギーの源である太陽に擬したのは、より広い生命讃歌を想ったうえでした。
まずは新しくできた大きな美術館に貼るお札（ふだ）として、高さ5メートルのバナーを制作しました。次にこのたび、皆様のお家／お部屋に貼ってもらうお札として、B全の大型ポスターを制作しました。イラストレーターとしては素人、拙いところは多々ありますが、心をこめて描かせていただきました。どうかご利益がありますように。また明らかに人類史に深く刻まれることになるであろう、2020年という年のメモリアルにもーー。 会田誠

The theme on Amabie, which once became popular on the internet, is quite a difficult subject to work with, and I thought hard about how to draw it with a twist as an artist…but in the end I decided to draw it as genuine and straightforward as possible. There is a legend where in the Edo period, Amabie appeared in front of a fisherman and said “If you draw me and hang it in your home, the epidemic will disappear.” I decided to incorporate this legend in my drawing just as is, in its simplistic content and style.
The human figure in the right holding a harpoon from the Jōmon period, and projecting an image of the ancient “people of the sea” is purposely drawn to look genderless, so you can imagine it being a sort of an androgynous fairy. There was a conscious decision to create it in a fantastical setting in order to cater to Kadokawa, the company that commissioned this painting and is well versed in this genre. The reason the virus; the most primitive life-form on Earth, is drawn as the sun; the source of energy for all things, is to bring a broadened sense of praise to all life.
First of all, I made a banner measuring 5 meters in height as a charm to hang in the newly constructed large museum. Next, to be able to hang the work as a charm in everyone’s homes/rooms, I created a large poster. As an illustrator, I am an amateur and there are things I lack in skills, however I did draw it with all of my heart. I sincerely wish you all of the best. The year 2020 will undoubtedly go down in history of humanity as an unforgettable memorial year.
